Betty L. Chew

Betty L. Chew, 94, of Reelsville, passed away in her home on Thursday, August 19, 2021 with her children at her side.

She was a simple woman who loved her family—especially her grandchildren. Babies made her smile. She was a hard worker who could out-work most men, and she never backed down from a challenge. She had a heart of gold and would share her shirt off her back if you needed it.

Betty was born on September 29, 1926, the daughter of Scott and Clara Asher Langley, in Brazil, Indiana.

On February 3, 1946, she married Earl Chew of Reelsville. They were happy residents of Pleasant Gardens (Reelsville) for seventeen years until he died of a sudden heart attack in 1963. She was left alone to raise a house full of children as a single mom. Betty led a challenging life, but she never complained; her glass was always half-full—never half-empty.

She loved to drink a hot cup of coffee with friends, and she only wanted her coffee altered with milk or half-and-half. She liked a good piece of pie, a fresh cookie, or fruit for dessert to go along with that cup of coffee. Her cold drink of choice was Coca-Cola—REAL Coke.
Betty especially enjoyed her grandchildren—she loved the babies. She was a loving grandma who could never get enough of loving those young ones. She especially enjoyed spending time with the youngest seven: Kaylynn, Keilani, Clark, Murphy, Addison, Lana, and Cameron. She was excited and looking forward to meeting her new great-granddaughter, Kennedy, who is expected to arrive in mid-November.
Holidays were important to her because family meant everything to Betty. She looked forward each year to the get-togethers in her house with home-cooked, family dinners on the special holidays of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; her parents Scott and Clara Asher Langley; brothers Jamie Langley, Forest Langley, Robert Langley, and William Langley; sister Mildred Mulvihill; son Steven Chew; grandsons Jason Archer and Scott Bond; granddaughter Danielle Chew; and great-grandson Keegan Chew.

Betty is survived by her sister, Norma Patterson; daughters Julie Battin (Tom), Janet Archer, Kathy Bond (Bill), Jamie Williams (Todd), and Kammie Meek (Brian); son Keith Chew; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four-legged best friend and protector Sam (Little Black); and a town full of friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 from 4:00-8:00pm at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E National Ave. in Brazil, Indiana. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, August 26, 2021 at 1:00 PM with Pastor William Best officiating. Burial will follow at Boone Hutcheson Cemetery.
