Robert Schlegel

May 11, 1931 - September 14, 2021

Robert “Bob” Schlegel, 90, of Carbon, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Gibson Family Center For Hospice Care, in Terre Haute with his loving family by his side.

He was born on May 11, 1931, in Clay City, Indiana, the son of Orville and Mary Schlegel. He married Beryl Phillips on June 25, 1955 and together they shared 54 years of marriage until her passing on April 23, 2010.

Bob served his country honorably, during the Korean War, in the United States Army Infantry. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127. As a civilian he worked for IBM until the company closed and he retired in 1987. During his many years of retirement Bob loved to keep busy, by planning, planting, and attending to his produce gardens. He loved to have people visit and enjoy his garden with him. Bob especially enjoyed growing corn, pumpkins, and strawberries.

Bob treasured his family, but you did not have to be a blood relative to be family to him. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Bob was proud to be a Brazil Elk’s member for 51 years. He enjoyed visiting and playing cards with his Elk’s brothers and sisters who won’t have to worry about being “Schlegeled” anymore.

He loved his family and his grandchildren brought him great joy. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Orville and Mary Schlegel, his wife Beryl, a brother Jerry Schlegel, in-laws: Richard McDonald, Pam and Pete Keller, and Carol Phillips.

Survivors include his son Tony Schlegel and wife Sabrina of Carbon; his daughter Gail Schlegel of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; grandchildren: Brittany Schlegel and Cody Schlegel; great-grandchild Zoey Percival; siblings: Arthur (Hope) Schlegel of Florida, Phyllis Kincaid (Doyle) of Florida; in-laws Jean Lambermont (Bill) of Brazil, Terry Phillips (Shirley) of Virginia, Garth Phillips of Nevada, Kay McDonald of Brazil, and Janey Schlegel of Indianapolis; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Graveside services will be at Clearview Cemetery on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 2:00pm with military services provided by the VFW, American Legion, as well as members of the United States Army.
