Betty Lou Burkhart

Betty Lou Burkhart, 89, of Brazil, passed away on September 28, 2021 at her residence, with her family by her side.

Betty was born August 14, 1932 in Clay County, the daughter of the late Willard and Rella (Mills) Hadley. She graduated from Brazil High School in 1950. Following high school, Betty worked at Hulman and Company in Terre Haute. Betty married Everett Lee Burkhart in 1952. In later years, Betty graduated from Indiana State University and worked as a special education teacher for many years in the Clay Community School Corporation.

Betty was active in several volunteer and service organizations, including the
St. Vincent Clay Hospital volunteers, the Brazil Friends of the Library, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the Clay County Retired Teachers Association, and the Clay County Humane Society. She was also a 50+ year member of the BPO Elks Lodge #762. In Betty’s free time, she enjoyed traveling and reading. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and loved all animals.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Lee, and her parents.

Betty is survived by children Vicki Anderson and husband Dennis, Brent Burkhart and wife Mary, Steve Burkhart, Scott Burkhart and wife Robin; grandchildren Shaun Anderson and wife Makallen, Meghan (Anderson) Jackson and husband Chuck, Katie Burkhart; great grandsons Jaden Anderson, Asher Anderson, Cooper Jackson, Garrett Jackson, and great granddaughter Lorelei Anderson; sister-in-law Isabelle Girton and husband Don; nephew Tom Gillfillan; nieces Dea Ann Gillfillan, Brenda Fager and husband Daniel, Lisa Ballinger; as well as cousins, extended family and friends, and special caregiver, Dorothy Julbert.

Per Betty’s request, cremation will take place. A private memorial service will be at a later date, with Pastor Ernie Rush officiating.
