James Frederick Cantrell

Nov. 10, 2021

James Frederick Cantrell, known to many as “Jim,” age 75, of Crawfordsville passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021. Jim, the son of Frederick and Martha Cantrell, was born in Jellico, Tennessee. Upon graduating from Crawfordsville High School in 1964, Jim moved to Indianapolis to begin his land surveying career and married his first wife. Jim moved to various places around the Midwest only to return to the Crawfordsville area in 1984 where he farmed for 15 years and remarried. Upon the passing of Jim’s second wife, Jim re-entered the surveying profession and began his own company.

The one constant surrounding much of Jim’s life was the love of the outdoors, no matter the weather condition. Jim earned the honor of Eagle Scout in his youth and continued to enjoy working and simply being outdoors throughout his life.

Surviving family are: his daughter, Stephanie and Todd Lemke of Austin, Texas with two grandsons (Kyle and Max); son Stephen and Jennifer Cantrell of Peoria, Illinois with one granddaughter (Ella); one granddaughter, Grace Vaughn of Monrovia, Indiana; and brother David and Gail Cantrell of Fort Meyers, Florida.

James is preceded in death by his parents; brother Michael Cantrell; his second wife, Susan Veatch Cantrell; and son James D. Cantrell.

Friends are invited to a visitation from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 1306 E. Main St., Crawfordsville. A funeral mass service will be held at 1 p.m., followed by internment at Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Jim’s honor to Montgomery County Free Clinic, P.O. Box 86 Crawfordsville, IN. 47933. (Please designate Meals on Wheels with your donation).
