LeRoy K. Howes

LeRoy K. Howes, 92 of Brazil, passed away December 13, 2021, at Hutsonwood. He was born January 9, 1929, in Terre Haute, the son of Arnold and Esther Reimer Howes. He was a graduate of Brazil High School, Class of 1947, where he was an outstanding athlete in three sports. Following graduation, he attended Indiana State University where he played football for three years.

LeRoy and Suzanne Hunter Howes were married September 20, 1950, and soon after he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. The Korean War was winding down and he spent two years as a Radar Bomb Squadron Technician. He was stationed in Atlanta and Birmingham airport centers, as well as two years in Frankfort, Germany and Paris, France.

Upon his discharge in 1956, LeRoy joined the A T &T Co. in Terre Haute. He was the operations supervisor for 32 years, retiring in 1989. He has been a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church.

LeRoy was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter. He was especially proud of being able to participate in watching his son’s and granddaughters sporting events in later years. He also enjoyed photography and learned how to develop photos as well. He did photos of sporting events and had prized photos of nature.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Suzanne; sons, Mark Howes and wife Lisa of Greencastle and John Howes and wife Bess of Terre Haute; granddaughters, Megan Howes, Madeline Howes, Abigail Thorlton and husband Nick, and Zoe Howes; three nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Peggy Pell and husband Bill Pell and brother-in-law Roy Hunter and wife Martha.

Services will be held Friday at 2:00 at the Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave. Brazil, IN. with Pastor Kerry Clear officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12-2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the YMCA 225 E. Kruzan St. Brazil, IN. 47834.
