Donald L Mier

AUGUST 2, 1932 – DECEMBER 26, 2021

Donald Lee Mier, 89, of Terre Haute, passed away on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at Harrison’s Crossing Health Campus, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was born on August 2, 1932, in Lincoln, Illinois, to Kenneth McKinney Mier and Florence Marie (Werschey) Mier.

Donald is survived by his children, Monica Zimmerman (Chuck), and Brent Mier (Gina Flynn); grandchildren, Danielle Duregger (Michael), Abby King (Jordan), Emily Zimmerman (Griffin), Victoria Mier, and Brayton Mier; great-grandchildren, Harper Grace King, George Charles Duregger, Luella Marie Duregger, and Harrison Wayne King; brother, David Mier (Mary Ruth); sisters, Shirley Wheat, Barbara Mier, and Sandra Randolph; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 59 years, Marilyn Rose (Lillie) Mier; and a nephew, Timothy Sullivan.

Donald was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy as a radio operator during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany. Upon returning from the Navy, Donald ran Mier TV Sales and Service alongside his father for many years. He retired as the Chief Engineer of Closed Circuit Radio and Television at ISU. Prior to that, he helped get the WTWO transmitter on the air, worked at WTHI and for several other stations around the Wabash Valley; Joplin, Missouri, and Omaha, Nebraska. Donald had a lifelong love of radio and television, was a ham radio operator, and a member of the National Association of Broadcasters.

Work wasn’t the only activity that Donald enjoyed. A man of many interests, he took flying lessons when he was younger. He was an excellent cook and baker, known for many specialties including fudge, peanut brittle, “Grandpa pancakes,” blueberry yum yum, and root beer floats. He liked to work in the garden and the yard. He was a devoted caregiver to his late wife, Marilyn, for many years. Donald served as the President of Terre Haute North Little League in 1980 and 1981. He loved watching youth sports and could always be found cheering from the sidelines at local tournaments.

Donald’s greatest achievement, was being the best grandfather in the world to his grandchildren. He loved to spend time with them and could keep up with them rollerskating, bicycling, and dancing. He was feisty, fearless, and footloose. His grandchildren kept him young. He will forever be remembered as a wonderful, doting father and grandfather with a youthful spirit.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, December 31 at Roselawn Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, at the funeral home, with military honors and Pastor Mark Grayless officiating. Donald will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park’s Chapel of Memories. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.roselawnfuneralhome.net
