Matthew Ross Carpenter, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at home, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 3, 1946, in Indianapolis, to Robert Remy Carpenter and Lorraine Ruth (Havill) Carpenter.

Matthew is survived by his children, Tammy Houston (Derrald), Teri Erickson (Darrell), Rob Carpenter (Samantha), Tracie McCarter (Adam); step-children, Barb Smith-Fish (James) and Danny Fuller; adopted children, Bonnie Bannowsky and Michael Evans (Kristen); brother, Melvin Carpenter (Carol); former spouse, Ramay Carpenter; twenty-four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sue Carpenter; son, Brian Keith; and a grandson, Logan Joseph.

Matthew retired from the Indiana Air National Guard 181st Fighter Wing. He also had previously served in the United States Navy. He earned his Associate’s Degree from Ivy Tech Community College. Matthew was a long-time member of Bible Baptist Church. He was an active volunteer for the Community Theater of Terre Haute and Terre Haute South High School Theater.

In his spare time, Matthew enjoyed playing golf. He also liked to watch old Westerns, The History Channel, and Maine Cabin Masters. He liked to bake cookies.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5 at Roselawn Funeral Home. A funeral ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, at the funeral home, with Pastor Kevin Szwarga officiating. Matthew will be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Park.
