David ‘Dave’ Eugene Johnson

David “Dave” Eugene Johnson, 74, of Crawfordsville passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at Franciscan Health Lafayette.

He was born July 28, 1948, at Crawfordsville, to the late Donald and Ruth (Ronk) Johnson.

Dave graduated from New Market High School in 1966 and proudly served his country in the United States Army as a military policeman during Vietnam. He married the love of his life, Margaret “Meg” Detchon, on April 26, 1969. Dave grew up on the farm and farmed his entire life. He worked for the Crawfordsville Police Department for 32 years, 16 of those years as the Chief of Police. After he retired from the city, he worked for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department for 10 years as a sheriff’s deputy then a process server. He enjoyed fishing, shooting guns, riding/crashing ATV’s, canoeing and kayaking, driving his 69 Mach 1 Mustang, and spending time with his grandchildren and all their activities. He will be missed dearly by his friends, family and the community he served.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret Johnson of Ladoga; son Chad (Amy) Johnson of Crawfordsville; daughter Lisa (Matt) Chandler of Fillmore; and four grandchildren, Ally (Kole) Bort and Elijah, Cort and Noelle Chandler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Duane Johnson; and grandson Donovan “Van” David Johnson.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 at Whitesville Christian Church, 3603 S. Ladoga Road, Crawfordsville. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 at the church, with Rev. Mike Whitacre officiating. The service will be live-streamed and recorded which can be viewed on his obituary page at www.sandersfuneralcare.com. Burial will follow at Ladoga Cemetery with military honors by the United States Army and Legion Post 72 Honor Guard.
