Phyllis Ann Maurer

Phyllis Ann (Stevenson) Maurer, 81, of Center Point, IN, passed away at Cloverleaf Healthcare in Brazil, IN on October 30, 2022.

 

Phyllis was born on June 1, 1941, in Brazil, Indiana the daughter of Harold and

Gertrude (Stearley) Stevenson. After the death of her mother in 1945, she lived with her grandmother Mary Stearley until her father remarried Thelma (McLain) Bell. She was raised on a farm in Clay County learning to milk cows and drive the tractor to help her father. She attended Ashboro School for 12 years and was one of four students in the last graduating class from the school in May 1959. February 13, 1960 she married Larry Maurer and they began their family, which grew to include 2 daughters and a son. While raising their family, she attended Union Hospital School of Nursing, receiving her Practical Nursing Diploma in September, 1969 and began what would become a lifelong career as a nurse in Clay County. Throughout the years she worked at Clay County Hospital, Clay County Health Center and the Community Medical Clinic in Brazil. While at CMC she served as office nurse for Dr John Nonweiler, Dr Paul Houston, Frank Kiefer PA, and Dr Charles French. During this time period she also returned to school and earned her associate degree in nursing from Indiana State University in May 1994. She retired from nursing in 2014.

 

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Earl Maurer, their son, Steven Earl Maurer and a great-granddaughter, Rylie Dawn Heffner.

 

She leaves behind a large family whom she enjoyed spending time with, including a brother Chester (Sue) Stevenson, sister Catherine Lee, 2 daughters, Leanne (Russ) True, Christine (Marty) Heffner and a daughter in law, Kelly Maurer. She has 11 grandchildren, Nicole (Greg) West, Dustin (Whitney) True, Austin (Melissa) Heffner, Jason True, Kellsy (A.J.) Terrell, Mallory (Nathan) Jenkins, Griffin (Rachel) Maurer, Jordan (Kylee) Maurer, Allison (Tyler) Lark, Meredith (Tyler) Mattox, Ian (Ashley) Heffner and 26 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Sabrina, Sydney, Zachary, Bentley, Ainsley and Isabella West, Makayla, Brylee and Devin True, Ren, Rhys and Reid Terrell, Amos, Sawyer, Hunter and Mazie Jenkins, Liev, Nicola and Eleanor Maurer, Lucy Maurer, Khloe and Kyden Lark, Nora and Eliza Mattox, Eden Heffner, and 1 great-great grandchild, Vayda West.

 

Special friends who loved and supported Phyllis so kindly. These include Sue Stevenson, Carolyn Thompson, Gena Stephens, Joann Collins and Jessica Modglin.

 

In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department or Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation .

 

Visitation will be held at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 East National Avenue in Brazil, Sunday, November 6, 2022 from 4pm to 8pm and again at 10am on Monday prior to the service. Services officiated by Pastor Doug Davis will be on Monday, November 7, 2022 at 11am. Burial will follow at the Center Point Cemetery.
