Reta Mae Pearson

Reta Mae Pearson

OCTOBER 30, 1937 – APRIL 26, 2023

In her 85 years, Reta Mae Clodfelter Pearson brought a lot of joy to her family and friends through food. Whenever her grandkids were coming, she’d spend a week baking – zucchini bread, sugar cream pies, peach and raspberry cobblers. Reta was an old-style country cook and proud of it. She learned from the best, her mom, Madonna Clodfelter. Too bad Reta’s skills didn’t transfer to her kids, Jeff and Lisa. Neither cares a hoot about cooking or baking.

But Reta’s kids did learn other valuable things from her. The importance of hard work, of setting goals and persisting to achieve them, of being honest and keeping your word, of voting in every election. Although Reta’s dad, Willard Clodfelter, saved to send Reta to college, she chose not to attend. She went to work after graduating from Bainbridge High in 1955. How she loved attending the annual Bainbridge and Clinton Center alumni banquets! Reta started work at IBM, stayed home when the kids were young, and retired from the state Division of Family and Children after 28 years. Reta always expected Jeff and Lisa to go to college and was proud that both have degrees and careers that fulfill them.

If you think Reta could brag about her kids, just wait until she got going about her four grandkids – Josh, Caleb, Jaki, and Wyn. Look out if she had new snapshots of them in her purse. And Reta was known for her really big purses! You’d be held up in the grocery checkout until Reta showed you every new photo. How she loved photos of her family; that was her favorite gift. Family photos and covered bridge pictures filled the walls of Reta’s home. The first of Reta’s five great grandchildren arrived shortly before her dementia set in. Although she couldn’t remember their names, she loved seeing photos of them.

Reta is reunited with her second husband, Dallas Pearson, her parents, and her many cat and dog kids.

Special thanks to Ann and her memory care team at Lincoln Hills in New Albany for loving Reta and giving her such compassionate care in her last year.

In Reta’s memory, her family invites you to play cards with friends; work a jigsaw puzzle; dig in the garden; buy a pair of shoes you don’t need; play croquet; savor being waited on in a restaurant (Reta loved to be waited on); admire a Stargazer lily; hunt for Morel mushrooms; enjoy a bowl of oyster stew (hold the raw oysters); or sip a Diet Coke.

Family and friends can visit Reta’s family at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. until time of service on Friday May 5, 2023. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 5th with Pastor Karl Sparks officiating. Burial will follow in Clinton Falls Cemetery. Wear your Western boots or a sparkly sweatshirt. Alongside her loving husband of 54 years, James Forest Mogan, Shirley achieved the American Dream of owning and operating their own business on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. Their complementary partnership was the foundation of their success: Jim had the ideas, and Shirley had the unwavering determination and skills to bring them to life.

Willingly leaving her Indiana home, husband, and children for months at a time, Shirley dedicated herself to the growth and success of their business. Her many talents and skills were evident in her ability to create reservation systems, network programs, and manage an extensive laundry facility and maintenance operations. With her remarkable handiness, Shirley even assembled all the furniture for their 20-unit motel, with the help of family and friends who worked alongside her. Her tireless efforts and steadfast commitment to their dream were truly inspiring.

In her leisure time, Shirley enjoyed playing games, especially cards and dominos. She cherished the memories made on bus trips with friends and family, as well as the excitement of traveling and mushroom hunting. Always on the lookout for a great deal, Shirley had a knack for finding bargains and had a deep appreciation for attending festivals, such as the shrimp festival in Gulf Shores and the Covered Bridge festival in Brazil.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Jamie Reigh Mogan; her son, Matthew Forest Mogan; daughter-in-law, Belinda Mogan; and three beloved grandchildren, Megan Reigh, Jacob Forest, and Jenna Reigh. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Forest Mogan; her parents, Edward and Edlene Buzard; and two sisters. Shirley's memory will live on through the lives of her family members and the countless individuals she touched throughout her life.

Funny, selfless, and handy, Shirley will be remembered for her unwavering love and support of her family, her dedication to her work, and her ability to make the impossible possible. Her passing leaves a void that can never truly be filled, but her legacy of love and determination will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Shirley Reigh Mogan's life was a testament to the power of love, hard work, and the importance of family. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Ruth Marie Blackford Donnelly

Ruth Marie Blackford Donnelly

Aug. 13, 1930-April 4, 2023

Ruth Marie Blackford Donnelly was born Aug. 13, 1930, at Waynetown, to Ariel and Erma Westfall Blackford. She passed away at age 92 on April 4, 2023, at her home in Bixby, Oklahoma, with her son Bill by her side.

She was a late-in-life surprise to her parents: her brothers, Bill, V.C., and Charles ranged in age from 14 to 21 when Erma finally got “her girl!”

Ruth graduated from Waynetown High School in 1949. On Sept. 3, 1949, she married Bob Donnelly from Keokuk, Iowa, at the Waynetown Baptist Church. Bob was in the Air Force at the time, so the newlyweds moved to a couple of postings for him, in Indianapolis and in Michigan.

Following Bob’s Air Force service, he and Ruth settled in Waynetown, and their family began to grow, first with daughter Linn, then with son Bill, and finally with daughter Denise. Ruth raised large gardens every summer, canning and freezing the vegetables she raised. She was also an excellent seamstress, making many of the family’s clothes. The family enjoyed many driving vacations to various parts of the United States, and they were fans of Indy car racing. Ruth and Bob attended the Indianapolis 500 every year for many years, as well as the time trials. These events were often shared with good friends Bob and Liz Keenan and their children. Ruth also enjoyed the activities of Sing Out Montgomery County, which Bob directed for a few years. She loved animals and had many pets, including a monkey!

A job change for Bob required the family to move to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in 1971. The family grew over the next few years with weddings for Linn, Denise and Bill and then grandchildren. The building of the Creek Turnpike forced Ruth, Bob and Bill and his family to leave Broken Arrow and move to Bixby, Oklahoma, in 1999.

Ruth has been preceded in death by her parents; her brothers and their wives, Charles (Mary), V. C. (June) and Bill (Viv); two nephews and their wives, Charles (Violet) and Don (Beverly) Blackford; and two nieces and their husbands, Anita Gray (Walter) and Annie Linker (Gary); son-in-law Bill Ball; daughter-in-law Gayle Donnelly; and grandsons, Bracken and Adam Ball; plus a great-nephew and several relatives from the Donnelly family.

She is survived by daughters, Linn Ball and Denise (Terry) Hamburger; son Bill Donnelly; six grandchildren, Jonathan (Shannon), Nathaniel and Patrick (Amanda) Ball, Jacob (Lacy) Hamburger, Ellen (Clay) Mol and Rob Donnelly; 10 great-grandchildren, Grainger, Thomas, Charlie, Elliott and August Ball, Aspen, Jace and Zack Hamburger and Jentry and Tucker Mol; plus several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, along with many dear friends and church family at both Waynetown Baptist Church and First Christian Church of Broken Arrow where Ruth and Bob have been members for many years.

Visitation hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, April 13, at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, with funeral services following at 1 p.m. Pastor Ron Raffignone will officiate. Interment will follow in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.

Martin Hugo Merrell

Martin Hugo Merrell

March 30, 2023

Martin Hugo Merrell, 72, died March 30, 2023, in a home he built himself in the Mackinaw River Valley in Tazewell County, Illinois. He was surrounded by his wife, daughter, grandchildren and nieces.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sherry; two daughters, Megan (Rob) Steier of Mackinaw, Illinois and Marnie (Derec) Baxter of Chatham, Illinois; and eight grandchildren, Arden, Zeke, Rah, Abi, Luke, Louisa, Sylvia and Silas. He is also survived by his sister Marcia Neel of Crawfordsville and his brother Phil Merrell of San Francisco, as well as a vast network of friends who made up the fabric of his life.

Martin spent his youth on his family’s land at the top of Covington Hill and along the banks of Sugar Creek. He came of age at the Crawfordsville Airport and Drive-In restaurant which his parents Bob and Lois managed from 1959 to 1968. He met his future wife there when she became employed as a carhop. Martin graduated from New Market High School as salutatorian in 1969, where he made lifelong memories competing as a Purple Flyer in basketball and pole vaulting. After high school he studied civil engineering at Ball State and Purdue before eventually finding his career path as a freight train conductor with Norfolk Southern Railroad.

During his 30 years of service with the railroad, Martin was an avid union man who believed every person should have the right to earn a fair wage to support their family. He took pride in mentoring new railroaders and took great pleasure in seeing the “young heads” succeed.

In his personal life, Martin will be remembered as the guy who made any gathering more fun and made everyone feel welcome. He knew the funniest jokes, the best magic tricks, the most ridiculous stories and the silliest campfire games. He never saw a bonfire that didn’t need another log. May his “chimley” fires live on in legend. He enjoyed a great number of recreational activities and loved to compete with friends in pool, ping-pong, golf, horseshoes, cards, and croquet.

A lifelong outdoorsman, Martin spent many seasons hunting deer and turkey with family and friends. He taught his grandchildren to find morels and insisted that they pick the horsenecks for the count. He enjoyed fishing except when he accidentally caught bull frogs. Martin had especially fond memories of times spent with buddies hunting elk in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming, snowmobiling in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, and riding through the Black Hills of South Dakota on his Indian Chief motorcycle.

In his later years, Martin settled into a long beard and mustache look that resembled Yosemite Sam. The gruff exterior belied the gentleness within him. He kept close ties with his many friends through the years and fretted over their tribulations. He had the utmost respect for the experience and expertise of his elders, and he worked hard to impart his knowledge to the next generation. He was a deeply patriotic man who believed in the values of our country and was grateful for and awed by the sacrifices made by our military men and women. He was generous and kind to friends and strangers alike, and he judged people on merit rather than bias. He loved old Westerns and was nostalgic for the time when neighbors did right by each other and could disagree with politeness and respect. Most of all, he was the best kind of loyal — one who saw the failures of his family and friends as anomalies and their successes as proof of their fine character.

Loved ones will remember his colorful language and creative slang, his quick temper, and his inability to do a single damn thing in moderation. He burned too hot and left us too soon, but it was wonderful to stand for a time in the glow of his flame.

Martin did not wish to have a funeral service and hoped that people would remember him as he was in life. Haensel-Oswald Funeral Home in Mackinaw is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Martin’s name to St. Jude Partners in Hope.

When I am gone, release me, let me go.

I have so many things to see and do,

You mustn't tie yourself to me with too many tears,

But be thankful we had so many good years.

I gave you my love, and you can only guess

How much you've given me in happiness.

I thank you for the love that you have shown,

But now it is time I traveled on alone.

So grieve for me a while, if grieve you must,

Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

It is only for a while that we must part,

So treasure the memories within your heart.

I won't be far away for life goes on.

And if you need me, call and I will come.

Though you can't see or touch me, I will be near.

And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear,

All my love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you come this way alone,

I'll greet you with a smile and a 'Welcome Home'.
