Walt “Turp” Johnson Turpin Jr., 84, passed away at home in Kingman on Friday, Aug. 19, 2022.

He was born June 27, 1938, at Veedersburg, a son of the late Water Johnson Turpin, Sr. and Elizabeth Ellen (Swingle) Turpin.

He was married April 4, 2004, at Lebanon, to Nancy Eva Golden Turpin. She passed away Jan. 8, 2013. Previously he was married to Diane (Perkins) Turpin.

Walt was raised and had attended schools in Veedersburg. From 1955 to 1957, he served his country honorable in the United States Navy.

He had worked for Butternut Bread in Peoria, Illinois and Peoria Tractor and Equipment, a CAT dealer. He then lived for a period of time in O’Fallon, Missouri where he was a diesel mechanic at various truck shops before he retired. He relocated to Lebanon in January 2001 and owned and operated his own shop.

Walt enjoyed working on old cars and fishing. He liked to watch high school and college basketball and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.                 

Survivors include children: Walter J. “John” (June) Turpin III of Winfield, Missouri, Bryan S. (Judy) Turpin of O’Fallon, Missouri, Dawn E. Johnson of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Juanita (Pete) Sari of Melrose Park, Illinois; step-children, Lynnette K. (Robert) Cox of Thorntown, Scott A. (Maria) Larew of Lebanon, Kristi A. (Karl) Schuh of Indianapolis and Lori Libbey of Lebanon; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles W. (Kathy) Turpin of Havana, Illinois, and Lloyd A. (Leona) Turpin of Veedersburg; sister Carolyn Faith Foxworthy of Thorntown; brother-in-law Bill Kavonus of Shawmut, Montana; many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents and his wives, Walt was preceded in death by son Anthony W. Turpin; sister Mary Ellen Kavonus; brother Laurence D. Turpin; sister-in-law Joyce Turpin; brother-in-law Earl Foxworthy; son-in-law Terry Libbey; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Visitation is planned 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon, with military rites will be held at the beginning of visitation at 5 p.m. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Lincoln Memory Gardens in Whitestown.
