Harry E. "Poppy" Mayle

July 30, 1938  -  December 24, 2022

Harry E. “Poppy” Mayle, 84 of Brazil, passed away December 24, 2022, at 2:33pm at Cloverleaf Healthcare, surrounded by his family. He had been diagnosed with cancer just weeks ago.

Harry was born in Clinton IN, on July 30, 1938, to Harry Mayle, Sr., and Jean Fleck Mayle. His family moved to Clay County when he was a child. He graduated from Staunton High School, Class of 1956, where he was known as an accomplished athlete, especially baseball. The spring of 1961, Harry was invited to the Detroit spring training. Later in his life, Harry was a proud dad, watching his children and grandchildren as they excelled in sports. He loved to watch his St. Louis Cardinals and was a devoted fan.

As a young man, he began hunting deer, squirrel, and turkey. He also enjoyed being in the woods to hunt mushrooms and ginseng. He taught his sons to hunt also. The ‘Morning Hunt’ was a group of friends that Harry was a part of. They didn’t hunt in the woods; they were on the golf course at Forrest Park. Harry took up the sport of golf many years ago and enjoyed playing as long as he could. He was a member of the Brazil Elks Lodge.

On September 22, 1957, Harry, and Nita Wilson Mayle were united in marriage. Together they raised their children in Clay County. They have faithfully attended Grace Chapel for the last several years. On Easter Sunday two years ago, Poppy was saved, and felt he had Jesus in his heart.

Harry worked as a Western-Southern Insurance agent for over 20 years. He was a skilled painter, and last worked at Citgo North. He enjoyed seeing the customers and working with the kids in the store.

He is survived by his wife, Nita Mayle; their children, Harry J. Mayle (Jackie Angleton) of Orlando, Lisa Miller (Les) and Mike Mayle (Lori) all of Brazil; grandchildren, Whittney Rains (Matt), Mallory Hamblin (John), Jesse Miller (Yesenia), Morgan Mayle, Craig Mayle (Sean), Mara Whitman (Logan), and Macy Webster (Brian); great-grandchildren, Callie Rains, Carter Rains, Lilly Loden, Jax Hamblin, Maylee Whitman, Tate Whitman and Abe Webster; a half-brother Jim Mayle of Greencastlle and a half-sister Esther Wilson (Terry) of Brazil.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Harriet Williams.

Services will be held Thursday at 6:00pm at Lawson-Miller Chapel with Pastor Tim Russell officiating. Cremation was chosen. Visitation will be from 4-6pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Grace Chapel, P.O. Box 228, Brazil, IN. 47834.
