Melvin L. Fagg

Melvin L. Fagg, passed away February 1, 2023 at 2:25 pm at The Gibson Family Center at Union Hospital. He was born October 3, 1948 in Vigo County, the son of Herman “Pete” Fagg and Virginia Jackson Fagg. Melvin graduated from Van Buren High School, Class of 1966.

 

On February 28, 1970, Melvin was united in marriage to Rachel Pell Fagg. Together they have been active at the Berea Christian Church. Melvin has always been a volunteer to help with youth activities in 4-H and with coaching Little League at Bowling Green. He also served as a 4-H Youth Leader with the Van Buren Hustlers. He was a part of the core group of community support that helped to build the 4-H Fairgrounds. He orchestrated the heavy equipment needed to fill, level and design the grounds and building preparation. Amax donated the equipment to be used and Melvin helped with the work. He also built a walking course at Eastside Elementary School so the kids could enjoy the area in all weather.

 

Melvin was a member of the Carbon Masonic Lodge #529, serving as Past Master and received his 50 year pin. He also was the Past Worthy Patron of the Carbon OES.

 

His working career was spent largely with AMAX Coal Company. His official title was heavy equipment operator, but he used the term, Dozer Operator. He retired in 1998 as the coal company operations changed. He later went to work at the Clay County Highway Garage until 2009.

 

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Pell Fagg; their children, Beth Bougher and husband Thomas, Bob Fagg and wife Sarah, Bryan Fagg and wife Cathy; grandchildren, Hannah Perin (Jim), Willis Bougher (Whitney), Madeline Nay (Patrick), Sarah Bougher (fiancé Nathan), Emily Haulk (Jared), Noah Duby, Audrey Fagg, Guthrey Fagg, Elaina Fagg, Jeannie Fagg, Darin Fagg, Trevor Fagg, Asher Fagg; great-grandchildren, Martin, Analeigh, Laila, Bowen, Liam, Isaiah, Raisie, Ruby, and Ian; brother Lester (Sheila) Fagg; sisters, Norma Rose, Sharon Reinoehl (Gregg); brothers and sisters in law, Harold and Rose Pell, Merle and Barbara Pell, Bryan and Linda Pell, Mary Ray and a large extended family.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Virginia Fagg; siblings, Martha Houk, Roy Fagg, Mona Trusler, Mary Cress, Janet Wardlow and brother in law, John Ray.

 

Visitation will be Thursday, February 9, 2023, at Lawson-Miller Chapel from 4-8pm. Military Honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army, the American Legion Post #2 and the VFW #1127, at 7:30pm Thursday at the funeral home. Services will be held Friday, February 10, 2023 at 11:00am at Berea Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Clay County 4-H Fairgrounds, 6656 IN-59 Brazil, IN. 47834 or to the Berea Christian Church.
