Richard Lee Francis

AUGUST 5, 1936 – APRIL 15, 2023

Richard Lee Francis, 86, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023. He was born on August 5, 1936, in Indianapolis, to Leroy and Mary (Reveal) Francis. A graduate of Garfield High School, he received his B.A. from Wabash College in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sharon Kemper of Colorado. He is survived by his loving wife, Judith Vaught Francis, whom he married on June 5, 1965. Other survivors include: a brother-in-law, Jon Kemper; sister, Mary Kay Andrew of Terre Haute; and a brother, William Francis and wife Sandy of Cape Coral, Florida; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Richard was a caseworker for the Marion County Department of Public Welfare. He then went into the ocean marine insurance business in Boston, Massachusetts and in Texas. In 1988, he and Judith returned to Indiana where he worked with his father for Sunset Harbor, Inc. and became its president after his father's death.

Among Richard's favorite memories were exploring the many attractions of New England and spending time with family on the lake. He also bicycled, jogged, and won a prize for ballroom dancing.

Richard's family would like to thank Gloria Jackson, Lee Ann Carter, Paul Burns, and others of Sunset Harbor for their years of service and dedication. Thanks also to the Union Hospital staff, Majestic Care North, and Southern Care Hospice for their care during Richard's final days.
