Virtus Wallace Stoffregen

APRIL 2, 1933 – APRIL 18, 2023

Virtus Wallace “Butch” Stoffregen, 90, of Greencastle, Indiana passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at Putnam County Hospital.

Butch was born in Westgate, Iowa on April 2, 1933, the son of William and Emma (Heeren) Stoffregen. He graduated from Maynard High School in 1951. After high school he earned his Bachelor of Arts at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa then went on to earn his Master Degree of Divinity from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa.

Pastor Stoffregen graduated at the top of his class at Wartburg Seminary, and went on to pastor several churches in the United States and Canada. Butch was an avid golfer, gardener, and hunter. He was also a huge Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Cubs fan.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 70 years, Valerie Stoffregen, Greencastle; four children Kimberlee Motley, Webster, Kentucky, Noel McClure, (Matthew), Rice, Minnesota, Kori Stoffregen, (Stacie)k, Greencastle, and Staci Weinschenk, (Roderick), Greencastle; seven grandchildren, Kim Reed, (Joshua), Lorretta Davis, (Frank), Meks McClure, Alex Vittetow, (Klayton), Seelye Stoffregen, Sedrick Weinschenk, and Whitney Weinschenk; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, ValRae Sharon; and six brothers including his twin brother.

Services will be held 5:00 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2023, at St. Stephen’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Plainfield, Indiana.
