Nina Bettenbrock
February 15, 1930 - July 26, 2023
Nina Faye Bettenbrock, 93, of Cory, passed away at home on July 26, 2023. She was born to Clem and Ruth Butt on February 15, 1930, in Brazil, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clem and Ruth; a son, Van Ray Bettenbrock; two brothers, Max (Deloris) Butt and Gene Ray (Charlotte) Butt; brother-in-law, Gary Schopmeyer; and sister-in-law, Ruth McCullough.
Nina grew up north of Cory with her parents, two brothers, Max and Gene Ray, and one sister, Reba. Nina graduated from Staunton High School in 1948 and married Marvin Lee Bettenbrock on April 17, 1949. Nina worked at Chesty’s Foods Terre Haute for about 3 years before starting their family. She truly enjoyed being a full-time and devoted housewife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Their three sons, Vern, Van, and Von were the center of their world. Marvin and Nina lived in the same house in Cory and were married for 74 years. They dearly loved living on their farm south of Cory and raising their family. They were dairy farmers until 1968, when they sold their cattle, and grain farmers until 2020.
Marvin and Nina were very loyal, devoted, and faithful members of Cory Zion Church, and Nina held the position of Church Treasurer for several years, attended Sunday School, sang in the church choir, and participated in all church functions. They rarely missed attending church services. Their love and dedication to the Lord was evident throughout their years together. They provided a solid Christian home for their family.
They love family gatherings, cutting grass, gardening, canning, and watching basketball games, especially IU games. Nina loved to keep scores of all the games (the best statistician ever!). They also watched many baseball games together, especially the Chicago White Sox. They also loved visiting and playing games with friends and family.
Nina loved to cook, especially pies and cakes. She definitely had a sweet tooth. She cooked several big family meals over the years. She prepared three meals a day for her family for over 73 ½ years. Nina was very kind, sweet, loyal, and caring. She didn’t like attention drawn to herself and always used the kindest words. She colored several books of pictures as a hobby as she grew older. Nina loved to keep farm records and worked on their taxes every year, including the 2022 taxes. Nina kept a daily journal of their life for several years and would refer back to her entries to remember what happened on what date. She always wanted to keep busy at home.
Nina loved spending time talking, coloring, and playing games with her grandchildren, Clayton, Kari, and Logan. As time went on, she watched them graduate, get married, and have children of their own. Nina was so very proud of them. She was thrilled to see her great grandchildren, Caden, Mallori, Cambri, Jack, Rylie, Alina, and Ayla when they came to visit. Her face just beamed full of love and pride.
Survivors include her devoted husband, Marvin Bettenbrock; two sons, Vern (Pam) Bettenbrock of Cory, and Von (Kim) Bettenbrock of Cory; three grandchildren, Clayton (Marie) Bettenbrock of Cory, Kari (Chris) Durham of Clayton, IN, and Logan (Elyssa) Bettenbrock of West Terre Haute, IN; seven great-grandchildren, Caden, Mallori, and Cambri Bettenbrock, Jack and Rylie Durham, and Alina and Ayla Bettenbrock; one dear sister, Reba Schopmeyer; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 East 8th Street in Clay City. Visitation will be 1:00 – 3:00 and funeral service at 3:00 with Steve Blaydes officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Gentiva Hospice of Indiana for the excellent care and concern for Nina and Marvin. A special recognition to Ashley, Glenda, Angie, and Summer for going above their duties and responsibilities to sincerely care for them. It takes special people to fulfill their roles and they are truly angels among us!
