John Dee Allen

FEBRUARY 19, 1935 – AUGUST 4, 2023

John Dee Allen, 88, of Greencastle, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023.

Born in Greencastle February 19, 1935, the son of Bayard Scobee and Frances (Browning) Allen. He was a basketball player and graduate of Greencastle High School “Class of 1953”. He married Suzanne Glore on October 13, 1957.

John enjoyed a successful 38 year career with IBM starting in February 1954 and retiring in August 1992. In his spare time, he worked for years in the family business at Allenhill Golf Course.

He enjoyed traveling, golf and spending time with his family. John helped his son-in-law, Mark for years with his car racing endeavors, traveling with him to be his pit crew helping change tires, work on the car as well as providing transport of Mark’s car to long distance events and be his “ears” on the in-car radio during races. John had a love of cars and motorcycles throughout his lifetime, even purchasing a Honda Gold Wing trike at the age of 72. John and Susie went on many trips on the trike and enjoyed the open road for several years.

John was a devoted caretaker to his wife for years when her health began to decline. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and his beloved granddog, Hannah.

Survived by his daughter, Lisa (Mark) Hupfer; brother Bayard Lee Allen; niece Beth (John) and great nieces Nicole (Steven) and Megan.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of service on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Putnam County Community Foundation-Greencastle Dollars for Scholars/GHS Alumni Scholarship.
