Frank R. Bundy

On Oct. 22, 2023, Frank R. Bundy, 96, of Greencastle, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side.

Frank was born on Jan. 18, 1927 to the late Walter and Claire (Gass-Martiz) Bundy.

Frank served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1st Marine Division serving two tours in World War II, receiving a Purple Heart for his service, and the Korean War. Upon returning from World War II, Frank studied art including life drawing classes under Elmer Taflinger. He dedicated 27 years to IBM, retiring from his department manager position in 1987.

Golf was his passion. He enjoyed being on the course and watching golf on TV. He was an accomplished golfer, receiving numerous awards from Windy Hill Country Club (Pro-Am Champs 1967, Men’s Club Championship 1968, Club Recognition 2001, Super Senior Champion 2004) and the IBM League Watson Trophy (Winning Team – 1971 and 1972) as well as other runner-up and flight championships. For many years, Frank and his golf friends could be seen walking laps at the DePauw University track.

His love of golf extended to his talent with woodworking, with flawless club repairs and building custom clubs. For as long as he could, and in later years with the help of his son Frank, he created handmade Christmas gifts for family and friends. If his work were in a gallery, you would see Galileo thermometers, tissue boxes, shelves, built-in cabinets, picture frames, clocks, wall décor, memorial/keepsake boxes and more. His preferred wood was cherry, which he would stain as perfectly as the cuts and sanding. He was an artist with an eye for beauty and this included his penmanship. Greeting cards, notes, checkbook entries and his signature were all precisely written with a ruler.

Frank meticulously cared for his yard, enjoyed having a garden and feeding birds including hundreds of hummingbirds, squirrels and other animals. When his children were young, the family raised beagles and Frank had a fondness for the runt of the litter. He enjoyed a good joke and knew how to deliver a punchline.

Frank is survived by his partner of 40 years, Janet Hroch; daughter Carla Mackie; son Frank Bundy and his wife Cindy; son Clinton Bundy and his wife Susan; grandchildren Travis Hurst and his wife Kari, Heath Hurst and his wife Jessie Bishop, Dr. Alyson Bundy and Caroline Bundy Esq.; great-granddaughters Jayda, Jena and Parker Hurst; and great-grandson Hollis Hurst; niece Hollis Zender (husband Ray Zender); Cindy’s daughters Jamie Englert and Amanda Keafer; and his partner’s son Joe Hroch and daughter Norma Allen, grandchildren Katie, Ben and Maggie Allen; and Labrador retrievers Sam and Sadie (the runt of the litter).

In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his brother George Bundy and sister Virginia Neier.

A private service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. His memory lives on in all who loved him.
