Charles L. Cox Sr.

Charles L. Cox Sr., 90, of Greencastle, passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023.

He was born at his family home near Eminence on Dec. 24, 1932 to the late Maurice and Ruth (Maxwell) Cox.

Charles “Sonny” was the oldest child and was raised on a farm in rural Morgan County. He was a graduate of Eminence High School in the class of 1950. Upon leaving the farm, Charles and Vera Jean (Sullivan) Cox wedded on Feb. 9, 1952.

Charles and Vera relocated to Mooresville and welcomed sons Charles Jr. and Douglas.

Charles’ vocation was that of an electrician at Indiana University Health, serving 33 years and retiring in 1994. In retirement he served 15 years in security at the Peeler Art Center at DePauw University, finally retiring at age 87.

His hobbies included home renovations and restoration of antique vehicles. He will also be remembered for his sharp memory and recollection of his long life. He enjoyed making people laugh with his ability to put a humorous twist on his many stories.

Along with his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, oldest son Charles Jr. and his sisters, Darlene Burrell and Jacqueline Hall.

Charles is survived by his son, Douglas Cox and wife Carol of Greencastle; granddaughters Amanda Lucas (Jason) of Danville and Rachel Trbovic (Phil) of Indianapolis; step-grandsons Aaron Jones (Sara Miller) of Plainfield and Pete Jones (Rachel); five step-grandchildren; and a dear companion, Juanetta Fidler of Cloverdale.

Funeral services for Charles will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service time of 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mannan Cemetery.
